War-aversion, Desire as a Policy Fault, and Analysis of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Governance
एवंरूपं कर्मफल नरेन्द्र मात्रावहं हृदयस्य प्रियेण । स क्रोधजं पाण्डव हर्षजं च लोकावुभौ मा प्रहासीश्चिराय,नरेन्द्र! इस प्रकार हृदयको प्रिय लगनेवाले विषयसे कर्मफलकी प्रार्थना नहीं करनी चाहिये। पाण्डुनन्दन! आप क्रोधजनित नरक और हर्षजनित स्वर्ग--इन दोनों लोकोंमें कभी न जाय; (अपितु सनातन मोक्ष-सुखके लिये निष्काम कर्म अथवा ज्ञानयोगका ही साधन करें)
sañjaya uvāca | evaṃrūpaṃ karmaphalaṃ narendra mātrāvahaṃ hṛdayasya priyeṇa | sa krodhajaṃ pāṇḍava harṣajaṃ ca lokāv ubhau mā prahāsīś cirāya narendra ||
Dijo Sañjaya: «Oh rey, no debe uno rogar por un fruto de la acción de ese tipo, medido tan solo por lo que agrada al corazón. Oh hijo de Pāṇḍu, que por largo tiempo no caigas en ninguno de los dos mundos: el infierno nacido de la ira o el cielo nacido del júbilo del apego.»
संजय उवाच
Do not seek action’s rewards merely because they please the heart; both anger-driven conduct and attachment-driven exhilaration bind one to limited destinations (hell or heaven). The implied ideal is steadiness and freedom from craving and aversion, oriented toward higher liberation rather than finite rewards.
Sanjaya, reporting counsel within the Udyoga Parva context of impending conflict, conveys a moral warning: the addressee should avoid being propelled by anger or by elated attachment to outcomes, since both lead to constrained post-mortem ‘worlds’ rather than the highest good.
