Drupada’s Alarm and Inquiry Regarding Śikhaṇḍinī (द्रुपदस्य भय-विमर्शः)

Educational Q&A

The passage frames a sensitive personal transformation within the ethical demand of yathā-nyāya—acting according to justice and propriety. It highlights how rulers must judge fairly even when social shame and unusual circumstances prevent direct testimony, and how personal choices carry consequences that must be handled with dharmic discernment rather than impulse.

Bhīṣma reports the Yakṣas’ explanation to the king: Drupada’s child Śikhaṇḍinī received male potency from Sthūṇa, who took on female form in exchange. Because Sthūṇa is now ashamed to appear publicly, he does not come that day; the king is urged to decide the matter justly while the vimāna remains there.
