Ambā’s Vow of Tapas after Paraśurāma’s Assessment (अम्बाया तपोव्रतनिश्चयः)

स तु गत्वा च नगरं भायामिदमुवाच ह,तब राजा ट्रुपद नगरको लौट गये और अपनी पत्नीसे इस प्रकार बोले--*देवि! मैंने बड़ा प्रयत्न किया। तपस्याके द्वारा महादेवजीकी आराधना की। तब भगवान्‌ शंकरने प्रसन्न होकर कहा--पहले तुम्हें पुत्री होगी; फिर वही पुत्रके रूपमें परिणत हो जायगी। मैंने बार- बार केवल पुत्रके लिये याचना की; परंतु भगवान्‌ शिवने इसे दैवका विधान बताया है और कहा--“यह बदल नहीं सकता। जो कहा गया है, वही होगा'

sa tu gatvā ca nagaraṃ bhāryām idam uvāca ha | devi mayā mahān prayatnaḥ kṛtaḥ | tapasyā mahādevasya ārādhanā kṛtā | tataḥ bhagavān śaṅkaraḥ prasannaḥ san uvāca—pūrvaṃ te kanyā bhaviṣyati; punaḥ saiva putrarūpeṇa pariṇamiṣyati | mayā punaḥ punaḥ kevalaṃ putrārthaṃ yācitaṃ; kintu bhagavān śivaḥ etad daivasya vidhānam iti uktvā—idaṃ na parivartayituṃ śakyam; yad uktaṃ tad eva bhaviṣyati—iti |

Al regresar a su ciudad, el rey dijo a su esposa: «Señora, he hecho un gran esfuerzo. Mediante austeridades adoré a Mahādeva. Entonces Śaṅkara, complacido, declaró: “Primero tendrás una hija; después, esa misma criatura se convertirá en hijo”. Una y otra vez supliqué sólo por un hijo varón, pero Śiva dijo que ésta es la ordenanza del destino y no puede alterarse: lo pronunciado se cumplirá sin falta».

Educational Q&A

Even intense personal desire and effort may be bounded by daiva-vidhāna (the divine/fated order); one is urged to accept what is ordained while continuing to act with sincerity and devotion.
