Kuntī–Karṇa Dialogue: Loyalty, Fate, and Constrained Assurance
प्रकाशकर्मा तपनो यो<यं देवो विरोचन: । अजीजनत त्वां मय्येष कर्ण शस्त्रभृतां वरम्
prakāśakarmā tapano yo 'yaṃ devo virocanaḥ | ajījanat tvāṃ mayy eṣa karṇa śastrabhṛtāṃ varam ||
Dijo Karna: «Aquel dios Virocana, radiante y dador de calor—cuya obra misma es iluminar—te engendró en mí, oh Karna, como el más excelso entre los portadores de armas».
कर्ण उवाच
The verse frames martial prowess and personal identity as rooted in a higher, divinely sanctioned origin, suggesting that excellence and destiny are not merely self-made but arise from causes beyond ordinary human control.
Karna is speaking and invokes a radiant divine figure (identified with the Sun through the epithet tapanaḥ) to assert a divinely grounded origin and to claim preeminence among warriors, strengthening his self-presentation and legitimacy in the unfolding conflict.
