Shloka 10

मनुरुवाच — इन्द्रिय-मनः-ज्ञान-क्रमः

Manu on the hierarchy of senses, mind, and knowledge

सत्यमग्निपरीचारो विविक्तानां च सेवनम्‌

bhīṣma uvāca | akṛtaprajño bālo mohaṃ gacchati jāpakaḥ | sa mohān nirayaṃ yāti tatra gatvānūśocati ||

Dijo Bhishma: «Un practicante infantil, falto de discernimiento maduro, cae en la ilusión mientras realiza el japa. Impulsado por esa ilusión, va a un estado infernal; y, una vez allí, se lamenta sin cesar. Esta enseñanza advierte que disciplinas espirituales como el japa deben apoyarse en la comprensión correcta y el dominio de sí; de lo contrario, la práctica se vuelve otra forma de ignorancia que conduce al sufrimiento y no a la liberación.»

Educational Q&A

Japa and other spiritual disciplines bear fruit only when guided by developed discernment (prajñā) and ethical self-control; performed in ignorance, they can deepen delusion and lead to suffering rather than liberation.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and renunciation, Bhishma cautions the listener that a misguided, undiscerning ascetic who practices japa may become deluded and thereby fall into a painful state, lamenting the consequences.
