अथास्यासीदियं चिन्ता तत् प्राप्प सुमहद् भयम् । न्यौले और उल्लू--दोनोंका लक्ष्य बने हुए उस चूहेको बड़ा भय हुआ। अब उसे इस प्रकार चिन्ता होने लगी-- ।। आपपशद्यस्यां सुकष्टायां मरणे प्रत्युपस्थिते
athāsyāsīd iyaṃ cintā tat prāpya sumahad bhayam | nyaule ca ulūke—dvayor lakṣya-bhūtasya mūṣakasya mahad bhayam abhavat | athāsyaivaṃ cintā jāyate—āpadi prāptāyāṃ su-kaṣṭāyāṃ maraṇe pratyupasthite ||
Dijo Bhishma: Entonces surgió en él una grave inquietud, y fue presa de un gran temor. El ratón, convertido en blanco tanto de la mangosta como del búho, quedó sobrecogido de terror. En aquella calamidad extrema, con la muerte ya muy cerca, comenzó a pensar de este modo.
