तम्मित्र कारणं सर्व विस्तरेणापि मे शूणु । कारणात् प्रियतामेति द्वेष्यो भवति कारणात्,“इसके सिवा तुम जो यह मीठी-मीठी बात कह रहे हो कि “आज तुम मुझे बड़े प्रिय लगते हो” इसका भी कारण है, मेरे मित्र! वह सब मैं विस्तारके साथ बताता हूँ, सुनो। मनुष्य कारणसे ही प्रेमपात्र और कारणसे ही द्वेषका पात्र बनता है
tan mitra kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ vistareṇāpi me śṛṇu | kāraṇāt priyatām eti dveṣyo bhavati kāraṇāt ||
Bhīṣma dijo: «Escucha, amigo mío, mientras te expongo con detalle toda la razón de esto. Incluso las palabras dulces que pronuncias —“Hoy me pareces muy querido”— tienen una causa. Por causas el hombre es amado, y por causas también es odiado».
भीष्म उवाच
Affection and aversion do not arise without grounds; they are produced by causes—conduct, qualities, actions, and circumstances. Therefore one should examine causes rather than be carried away by flattering speech or sudden feelings.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma continues his didactic discourse, responding to a conversational prompt about someone expressing fondness. He frames the discussion by saying he will explain the underlying reasons, emphasizing that both love and hatred are causally conditioned.
