Garuḍa Array and the Ardhacandra Counter-Formation

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how the chaos of war overwhelms personal identity and orderly conduct: even the customary kṣatriya practice of declaring one’s name and lineage becomes inaudible. It implicitly contrasts dharmic clarity and recognition with the dehumanizing confusion produced by large-scale violence.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the roar of drums and the general tumult on the battlefield was so intense that he could not hear warriors calling out their names, clans, or mutual challenges—signals normally used to identify opponents and proclaim valor.
