Āśvamedha-dīkṣā-nirdeśaḥ — Scheduling the Initiation and Assigning Protection for the Horse
The verse foregrounds the ethic of śuśrūṣā—respectful attendance and service to a wise elder—as the proper prelude to receiving guidance on dharma. Yudhiṣṭhira’s approach models humility and readiness to learn before asking weighty questions.
Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates that Yudhiṣṭhira, accompanied by Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka heroes, sits near Vyāsa in a posture of service. After varied conversation, Yudhiṣṭhira begins to address Vyāsa, introducing a forthcoming dialogue or instruction.
