Austerity, regulated fasting, residual-eating, and hospitality
ये च भाष्यविद: केचिद् ये च व्याकरणे रता: । अधीयते पुराण ये धर्मशास्त्राण्यथापि च
bhīṣma uvāca | ye ca bhāṣyavidaḥ kecid ye ca vyākaraṇe ratāḥ | adhīyate purāṇe ye dharmaśāstrāṇy athāpi ca ||
Bhīṣma dijo: Aquellos que conocen los bhāṣya (comentarios de autoridad), aquellos entregados a la gramática (vyākaraṇa), y aquellos que estudian los Purāṇa y también los Dharmaśāstra: tales brahmanes, disciplinados y consumados, por su saber y su recta conducta se vuelven fuente de pureza para los demás. Se describe que su sola presencia y su fidelidad al estudio sagrado y a la práctica ética santifican incluso a otros brahmanes sentados dentro del alcance de su mirada.
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma praises disciplined Brahmins devoted to rigorous scriptural learning—commentaries, grammar, Purāṇas, and Dharmaśāstras—implying that true scholarship joined with proper conduct has a purifying, uplifting influence on society.
In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma continues enumerating the qualities of exemplary Brahmins, highlighting their fields of study and suggesting that such learned, self-controlled persons sanctify others by their presence and practice.
