Even when one is in a foreign or another’s territory, one should not neglect one’s duty to the ancestors; prescribed pitṛ-offerings remain a continuing obligation and a marker of dharma.
In Bhīṣma’s instruction on dharma, he begins stating a rule concerning the performance of ancestral offerings (pitṛ-kriyā/śrāddha) when a person is away from their own homeland, setting up the consequences or merits that follow.
