Mataṅga–Śakra Dialogue on Tapas, Status, and Moral Qualities

(नारायणादक्षयात्‌ पूर्वजाता विष्णो: पादात्‌ शिशुमाराद्‌ ध्रुवाच्च । सोमात्‌ सूर्यान्मेरुरूपाच्च विष्णो: समागता शिवमूर्थ्नो हिमाद्रिम्‌ ।।) भगवती गंगा पूर्वकालमें अविनाशी भगवान्‌ नारायणसे प्रकट हुई हैं। वे भगवान्‌ विष्णुके चरण, शिशुमार चक्र, ध्रुव, सोम, सूर्य तथा मेरुरूप विष्णुसे अवतरित हो भगवान्‌ शिवके मस्तकपर आयी हैं और वहाँसे हिमालय पर्वतपर गिरी हैं ।। सुतावनी ध्रस्य हरस्य भार्या दिवो भुवश्चापि कृतानुरूपा । भव्या पृथिव्यां भागिनी चापि राजन्‌ गड्जा लोकानां पुण्यदा वै त्रयाणाम्‌,गंगाजी गिरिराज हिमालयकी पुत्री, भगवान्‌ शंकरकी पत्नी तथा स्वर्ग और पृथ्वीकी शोभा हैं। राजन! वे भूमण्डलपर निवास करनेवाले प्राणियोंका कल्याण करनेवाली, परम सौभाग्यवती तथा तीनों लोकोंको पुण्य प्रदान करनेवाली हैं

nārāyaṇād akṣayāt pūrvajātā viṣṇoḥ pādāt śiśumārād dhruvāc ca | somāt sūryān merurūpāc ca viṣṇoḥ samāgatā śivamūrdhno himādrim || bhagavatī gaṅgā pūrvakāle 'vināśī bhagavān nārāyaṇāt prakaṭitā | sā bhagavato viṣṇoḥ caraṇāt śiśumāra-cakrāt dhruvāt somāt sūryāt merurūpād viṣṇoḥ avatīrya bhagavataḥ śivasya mūrdhni samāgatā, tataḥ himālaya-parvate patitā || sutā caiva himādreḥ harasya bhāryā divo bhuvaś cāpi kṛtānurūpā | bhavyā pṛthivyāṃ bhāginī cāpi rājan gaṅgā lokānāṃ puṇyadā vai trayāṇām ||

Dijo el Siddha: En tiempos antiguos, la bienaventurada Gaṅgā surgió del imperecedero Nārāyaṇa. Descendiendo desde los pies de Viṣṇu—atravesando la esfera celeste de Śiśumāra, Dhruva, Soma, Sūrya y el Viṣṇu en forma de Meru—llegó a reposar sobre la cabeza del Señor Śiva, y desde allí cayó sobre el Himālaya. Es hija del rey de las montañas, Himālaya; consorte de Hara (Śiva); ornamento digno tanto del cielo como de la tierra.
