One who is truly righteous and fit to be a protector must not forsake those who have surrendered for refuge; steadfast protection of the dependent is presented as a central dharma that yields both moral merit and worldly well-being.
Vāyu is speaking in a didactic context, praising the virtue of being a reliable refuge (śaraṇya) and stating the fruits that follow from not abandoning supplicants—longevity, health, prosperity, wealth, and abundant fulfillment.
