अविद्दान् भीरुरल्पार्थे विद्याविक्रमदानजम् । यशः प्रार्थयसे नूनं तेनासि हरिण: कृश:
avidvān bhīrur alpārthe vidyā-vikrama-dāna-jam | yaśaḥ prārthayase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ ||
Dijo el brāhmaṇa: «Ciertamente no eres verdaderamente sabio, y sin embargo buscas la fama que se dice que nace del saber. Aunque tímido, anhelas el renombre nacido del valor; aunque posees escasa riqueza, codicias la reputación de gran dador. Por eso has quedado flaco y pálido como un ciervo—consumido por el deseo de prestigio sin la sustancia interior que lo engendra.»
