Vyāsa’s Arrival at Janamejaya’s Sarpasatra; Commissioning of Vaiśaṃpāyana’s Recital (व्यासागमनम्)
एतच्छुत्वा तु वचनं वासुकि: पन्नगोत्तम: । प्रादान्माममरप्रख्य तव पित्रे महात्मने
etac chrutvā tu vacanaṃ vāsukiḥ pannagottamaḥ | prādān mām amaraprakhya tava pitre mahātmane ||
Dijo Āstīka: «Al oír esas palabras, Vāsuki —el más excelso de los ofidios— me confió a tu noble padre, oh tú que resplandeces como los inmortales. Mucho antes de que llegara esta crisis, mi matrimonio fue dispuesto precisamente con este fin; y después, por obra de aquellos grandes rishis, tú naciste de mi seno. Ha llegado ahora el tiempo, anunciado de antemano, del sacrificio de serpientes de Janamejaya, y en ese rito las serpientes son consumidas por el fuego sin cesar. Por ello, temiendo por ellas, debes procurar su liberación. Salva también a mi hermano de esa llama terrible. No debe resultar vano el propósito por el cual fui entregada al servicio de tu sabio padre. Dime, hijo mío: ¿qué juzgas que sea el camino correcto para rescatar a las serpientes de esta calamidad?»
