आस्तीककथाप्रारम्भः — Beginning of the Āstīka Narrative

त॑ वासुकि: प्रत्यगृह्नादुद्यम्य भगिनीं तदा । नसतां प्रतिजग्राह न सनाम्नीति चिन्तयन्,इसी समय नागराज वासुकि अपनी बहिनको लेकर मुनिकी सेवामें उपस्थित हो गये और बोले, “यह भिक्षा ग्रहण कीजिये।” किंतु उन्होंने यह सोचकर कि शायद यह मेरे-जैसे नामवाली न हो, उसे तत्काल ग्रहण नहीं किया
taṁ vāsukiḥ pratyagṛhṇād udyamya bhaginīṁ tadā | na satāṁ pratijagrāha na sa nāmnīti cintayan ||
Dijo Śaunaka: Entonces Vāsuki, señor de los Nāgas, alzó a su hermana y la presentó como ofrenda de servicio, instando al sabio a aceptarla. Pero el sabio no recibió el don de inmediato, pues reflexionó con cautela que quizá ella no fuese quien verdaderamente llevaba el nombre destinado. El momento resalta una tensión moral entre aceptar lo ofrecido y asegurar que el acto concuerde con la verdad y con el voto asumido.
