Karma-yoga Discipline for the Twice-born: Upanayana, Upavīta Conduct, Guru-veneration, and Alms-regimen

गुरुरग्निर्द्विजातीनां वर्णानां ब्राह्मणो गुरुः / पतिरेको गुरुः स्त्रीणां सर्वत्राभ्यागतो गुरुः

gururagnirdvijātīnāṃ varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇo guruḥ / patireko guruḥ strīṇāṃ sarvatrābhyāgato guruḥ

Para los “dos veces nacidos” (dvija), el Fuego (Agni) es el guru; entre los órdenes sociales, el brāhmaṇa es el guru. Para las mujeres, el esposo es el único guru; y en todas partes, el huésped que llega debe ser tenido por guru.
