Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Śravaṇa of the Lord/śāstra entering through the ear destroys dehābhimāna and the craving that generates rebirth, yielding unwavering buddhi.
Vedantic Theme: Avidyā-born identification with body is cut by śruti-pramāṇa; steadiness of buddhi (niṣṭhā) arises from right hearing leading to dispassion.
Application: Daily disciplined listening/recitation of Hari-kathā and Upaniṣadic teaching; cultivate witness-attitude toward bodily sensations; reflect on impermanence to weaken deha-rati.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: teachings on dehābhimāna and vairāgya as prerequisites for liberation (general thematic parallel); Garuda Purana: emphasis on śravaṇa/kīrtana of Viṣṇu-nāma as purifier (general thematic parallel)
This verse states that bodily attachment is “bhava-pradā” (a cause of further becoming/rebirth); cutting it leads to steady spiritual understanding and supports liberation-oriented living.
It alludes to a subtle “karṇa-nāḍī” (ear-channel) as a locus through which transformative spiritual influence operates, resulting in severing the soul’s clinging to the body and thereby weakening the rebirth impulse.
Practice daily detachment: reduce identity with the body through meditation, hearing sacred teachings (śravaṇa), and ethical discipline—so desires that fuel repeated suffering and rebirth are gradually cut down.
