Sense-Discipline and Exclusive Refuge in Viṣṇu
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Prāṇa is identified with the ‘I-maker’ (ahaṅkāra), functioning as a lower principle among a tenfold set and driven by kāma and indriya-lordship.
Vedantic Theme: Ahaṅkāra as a limiting adjunct (upādhi) that appropriates life-force and experience; liberation requires discerning Self from ego-principle.
Application: Observe how ‘I’-sense rides on breath/impulse; practice prāṇa-sākṣitva (witnessing breath) and reduce kāma-driven reactivity to weaken ahaṅkāra.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.28 (tattva/avatāra mapping context)
This verse links prāṇa with ahaṅkāra (the ‘I-maker’), showing that the life-force in the subtle body is closely tied to ego-identity, which influences how the being experiences post-death states.
By describing prāṇa as ego-linked and driven by desire and the senses, it implies that the departed being’s subtle journey is shaped by attachments and sense-driven tendencies carried in the liṅga-śarīra.
Reduce desire-driven living and cultivate sense-restraint; weakening ahaṅkāra and kāma is presented as a way to lessen bondage and suffering tied to subtle-body conditioning.
