As we have learned from the descriptions in the Fifth Canto, the hellish planets are situated in the lower portions of this universe. Therefore they are called adho bhuvaḥ. Ajāmila could understand that the Yamadūtas had come from that region.

FAQs

This verse implies they departed after freeing Ajāmila from being dragged by the Yamadūtas, having intervened decisively to stop his being taken to the lower regions.

Because Ajāmila had already been bound and was being taken away; the sudden appearance of the beautiful, powerful Viṣṇudūtas and their act of releasing him was unexpected and overturned the Yamadūtas’ authority in that moment.

It highlights the protective power of sincere remembrance and chanting of the Lord’s name—cultivating nāma-bhakti daily can transform one’s consciousness and destiny even at life’s final moment.
