FAQs

This verse imparts vamśa-vidyā (genealogical knowledge): a precise succession of descendants used to preserve dynastic and historical memory in Purāṇic tradition.

By recording structured lineages (names, parentage, maternal attribution), it functions like a historical index—one of the Agni Purāṇa’s encyclopedic layers alongside ritual, polity, medicine, and poetics.

Recitation and preservation of righteous lineages is traditionally held to support smṛti (sacred memory) and dharma-continuity, honoring ancestors and reinforcing the Purāṇic ideal of orderly succession.
