Agni Purana — Sahitya-shastra, Shloka 4

Chapter 342: शब्दालङ्काराः

Verbal/Sound-based Ornaments

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Vyakarana","secondary_vidya":"Chandas","practical_application":"Guide permissible consonant repetition in sound-ornament and determine syllable weight (laghu) in metrical scansion based on consonant clusters with aspirates/sibilants.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Varṇa-āvṛtti Limit in Varga; Laghu Determination without Mahāprāṇa/Ūṣman Conjunction","lookup_keywords":["varga-varṇa","pañcama","āvṛtti-niyama","mahāprāṇa","ūṣman"],"quick_summary":"Do not force repetition past the fifth (nasal) of a consonant class in patterned sound. In scansion/phonetic reckoning, a syllable is treated as light when not conjoined with aspirates (mahāprāṇa) or sibilant/ūṣman sounds."}

Alamkara Type: Anuprasa

Concept: Order in language: aesthetic and metrical correctness arises from disciplined phonetic constraints.

Application: For poets/reciters: avoid awkward class-based repetitions; for metrists: decide laghu/guru by checking aspirate/sibilant conjunct influence as taught in this system.

Khanda Section: Vyakarana (Sanskrit Grammar & Phonetics / Shiksha)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Agni explains a consonant-class chart (ka-varga to pa-varga) with the fifth nasal marked as a boundary; beside it, a scansion grid shows laghu syllables when free of aspirate/sibilant conjunction.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, Agni before a stylized varga-chart painted like a temple panel; fifth letters highlighted; scansion marks (laghu strokes) shown; bold outlines and warm tones.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, gold-framed educational panel with varga rows and the pañcama boundary; Agni holding a pointer; embossed gold accents on key letters.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, classroom diagram: varga table and laghu/guru examples; neat calligraphy; Agni instructing students with palm-leaf notes.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, scholar’s pavilion with a large folio showing varga chart and metrical marks; meticulous detailing, subdued elegance."}

FAQs

It teaches phonetic/grammatical rules: (1) do not extend repetition of varga consonants beyond the pañcama (nasal) of the series, and (2) identifies conditions under which syllables are counted as laghu (light) with respect to aspirates and sibilants in combination.

Alongside ritual and dharma topics, the Agni Purana preserves technical śāstra material—here, Śikṣā/Vyākaraṇa and prosodic-linguistic rules—showing its role as a compendium of practical knowledge systems.

Correct pronunciation and sound-structure are traditionally held to preserve mantra integrity and textual accuracy; following such rules supports purity of recitation and faithful transmission, which is considered meritorious (puṇya) in śāstric culture.
