Compassion toward all beings, patient forbearance, humility free from pride, truthfulness, purity, effortless simplicity, auspicious conduct, and speech that is gentle and pleasing—these are the marks of a life aligned with dharma.
Sage Parāśara (in instruction to Maitreya)
Concept: Dharma is recognized by inner virtues—dayā, titikṣā, amānitā, satya, śauca—and by conduct and speech that are auspicious and gentle.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Cultivate non-harm, truth, cleanliness, and restrained speech as daily vows; measure progress by reduced ego and increased kindness.
Vishishtadvaita: Ethics becomes bhagavad-ārādhana when practiced as service by the self (jīva) that is a mode of the Lord, fostering harmony with His order.
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse places universal compassion (dayā) at the center of dharmic life, presenting it as a stabilizing force for society and a prerequisite for spiritually aligned conduct.
He frames dharma as recognizable inner-and-outer qualities—humility, truth, purity, patience, simplicity, and pleasing speech—showing that righteousness is lived through daily behavior, not merely ritual.
Though Vishnu is not named in the verse, these virtues are presented as the dharmic order that supports devotion and realization of the Supreme—Vishnu as the sustaining reality (viṣṇu-tattva) behind cosmic harmony.
