Even a Śūdra should give charity, and he may worship through the domestic offerings known as the pāka-yajñas. Likewise, he should duly perform the ancestral and related rites—indeed, all such prescribed observances are to be undertaken in that manner.
Sage Parāśara (teaching Maitreya in the Vishnu Purana’s dharma section)
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Inclusivity of dharmic observance: dāna, domestic yajñas, and ancestral rites for the Śūdra
Teaching: Ethical
Quality: compassionate and instructive
Concept: Even the Śūdra is enjoined to give charity and may worship through simple domestic offerings (pāka-yajñas) and perform ancestral rites according to proper means.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Practice devotion through accessible forms—charity, simple daily worship, and honoring ancestors—without elitism about spiritual eligibility.
Vishishtadvaita: Devotion and dharmic participation are not restricted to ritual sophistication; service and sincerity within one’s station still relate the self to the Lord who indwells all.
Bhakti Type: dasya
This verse presents pāka-yajñas as accessible household rites that sustain dharma through daily worship and offerings, even for those outside the Vedic śrauta sphere.
Parāśara emphasizes practical righteousness—charity, domestic worship, and ancestral rites—framing dharma as performable through appropriate means rather than restricted to high ritual forms.
By outlining ordered duties that uphold the world, the text implies that such dharma participates in Vishnu’s cosmic governance—social and ritual harmony functioning under the Supreme Reality’s sustaining power.
