Having eaten properly, one should perform ācamana; facing east—or, alternatively, facing north—one should again perform ācamana in the prescribed manner, after washing the hands thoroughly from their very base.
Sage Parāśara (in instruction to Maitreya)
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Post-meal purification: ācamana with proper direction and washing of hands
Teaching: Ethical
Quality: authoritative
Concept: After eating, one should perform ācamana properly, facing east or north, and wash the hands thoroughly from the base.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Maintain deliberate hygiene and a brief purification pause after meals; use it as a transition into prayer/meditation rather than rushing onward.
Vishishtadvaita: Ritual purity (śauca) is treated as a supportive limb of devotion, preparing the body-mind for remembrance of the Lord who is served through all acts.
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse treats post-meal ācamana as a mandatory act of purification—resetting bodily and ritual cleanliness so one may return to disciplined, dharmic life and worship.
He specifies east-facing as standard, with north-facing as an allowed alternative, indicating that correct direction is part of the prescribed order (yathāvat) of daily rites.
Though Vishnu is not named in the verse, the Purana’s dharma-ācāra instructions function as preparatory discipline—purity and order that support Vishnu-centered devotion and the maintenance of cosmic and social harmony.
