Verse 1
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then one should go to Manmatheśa, revered by all the gods. O King, by bathing there alone, a man does not behold Yama’s realm.
Verse 2
Any woman without offspring who bathes there, O son of Pāṇḍu—O Pārtha—obtains a son, steadfast in truth and firm in vows.
Verse 3
O King, having bathed there, a man—pure and with a disciplined mind—should fast for one night, and he gains merit equal to the gift of a thousand cows.
Verse 4
Indeed, such a “king among tīrthas,” fulfilling cherished desires, is not found elsewhere. O King, whoever observes a three-night vow there gains merit equal to the gift of a hundred thousand cows.
Verse 5
There one should perform sacred dancing; the Supreme Lord (Śiva) is pleased—by the resounding music of songs and instruments, and also by keeping vigil through the night.
Verse 6
And at Ēraṇḍī I beheld Mahādeva as Manmatheśvara. How could Yama, even if angered, have any power there? For the auspicious Lord beholds and bestows only auspiciousness.
Verse 7
O King, Śambhu was established here through Kāma; therefore he grants desires. This Manmatheśvara on earth is a stairway leading to the path of heaven.
Verse 8
O Bhārata, there is a special excellence here at the time of sandhyā (twilight worship) and in offerings made for śrāddha. O best of kings, the supreme fruit of giving food is proclaimed here.
Verse 9
All this has been told to you, O Bhārata, because of your devotion. Manmatheśvara is renowned across the earth, bounded by the oceans.
Verse 10
O best of the Pāṇḍavas, one should arrange the gift of a cow on the thirteenth lunar day. In the bright fortnight of the month of Caitra, having gone there with controlled senses, one should perform it.
Verse 11
O best of kings, having kept night-vigil before the deity, one should, with devotion, offer a lamp of ghee right before the Lord.
Verse 12
Whether a woman or a man, the same result is declared for this observance.
Verse 102
End of the chapter (adhyāya).
