Rudrākṣa Māhātmya — The Greatness of Rudraksha
स्वयमेव कृतद्वारं रुद्रा क्षं स्यादिहोत्तमम् । यत्तु पौरुषयत्नेन कृतं तन्मध्यमं भवेत्
svayameva kṛtadvāraṃ rudrā kṣaṃ syādihottamam | yattu pauruṣayatnena kṛtaṃ tanmadhyamaṃ bhavet
In this world, a Rudrākṣa whose perforation is naturally formed is considered the best. But one made by human effort—bored or pierced artificially—is regarded as of middling quality.
Suta Goswami (narrating Shiva’s worship-teachings to the sages of Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
It emphasizes authenticity and natural sanctity in Shaiva practice: a naturally formed Rudrāksha is treated as more inherently pure and spiritually potent than one altered by human intervention.
Rudrāksha is an accessory of Saguna Shiva worship—supporting japa, devotion, and ritual discipline. By ranking beads, the text guides devotees to choose aids that best support focused Linga-upasana and reverence for Shiva’s sacred symbols.
Select Rudrāksha beads with naturally formed holes for japa (especially with the Panchakshara mantra, Om Namaḥ Śivāya). If using pierced beads, understand they are acceptable but described as of medium grade, so maintain extra care in purity, intent, and regular practice.
