agnirityādibhirmaṃtrairjābālopaniṣadgateḥ | saptabhidhūlanaṃ kāryaṃ bhasmanā sajalena ca
With the mantras beginning with “Agni…”, as taught in the Jābāla Upaniṣad, one should perform the sevenfold sprinkling and purification, using sacred ash (bhasma) mixed with water.
Sūta Gosvāmī (narrating Śiva’s worship-method to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Connects Purāṇic Śaiva practice to Upaniṣadic authority; mantra-guided bhasma-śuddhi is presented as a means to inner purification supporting liberation-oriented sādhana.
Mantra: “agnir …” (Jābāla-upaniṣad mantras beginning with ‘Agni’)—exact pada not fully quoted in the verse.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It sanctifies bhasma-dhāraṇa as an Upaniṣadic, purificatory act: the devotee ritually cleanses and consecrates the body-mind as a fit seat for Śiva-bhakti and Śiva-jñāna.
Bhasma mixed with water and applied with mantra is a preparatory rite for Saguna Śiva worship—especially before approaching the Liṅga—marking the devotee with Śiva’s signs (Tripuṇḍra) and aligning intention with Śiva’s grace.
Perform sevenfold sprinkling/cleansing with water-mixed bhasma while reciting the “Agni…” mantras (per the Jābāla Upaniṣad), as part of Tripuṇḍra/vibhūti practice.
