Types of Bhasma and the Method of Wearing Tripuṇḍra
उद्धूलनं त्रिपुंड्रं च धृत्वा शुद्धा भवंति च । भस्मनो विधिना सम्यक्पापराशिं विहाय च
uddhūlanaṃ tripuṃḍraṃ ca dhṛtvā śuddhā bhavaṃti ca | bhasmano vidhinā samyakpāparāśiṃ vihāya ca
By duly smearing oneself with sacred ash and wearing the Tripuṇḍra marks, one becomes purified; and by applying the bhasma according to proper rule, one truly casts off the accumulated mass of sins.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Significance: Frames bhasma-uddhūlana and Tripuṇḍra as a practical prāyaścitta leading to inner and outer śuddhi—preparing the soul for Śiva’s liberating grace.
The verse teaches that bhasma and Tripuṇḍra are not mere symbols but Shaiva purificatory sacraments: when adopted with proper observance and devotion to Pati (Shiva), they cleanse inner impurity and help burn the karmic residues called “heaps of sin.”
Bhasma and Tripuṇḍra are classic outward disciplines of Saguna Shiva-bhakti used before and during Liṅga worship. They mark the body as dedicated to Shiva and support ritual purity, steadiness, and reverence in pūjā.
Apply sacred ash (bhasma/vibhūti) in the prescribed Shaiva manner and wear the Tripuṇḍra; do it mindfully as a daily observance, ideally alongside Shiva-mantra japa (such as the Pañcākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”).
