Procedure for the Earthen Liṅga Worship
मानो महान्तमिति च चरेत्प्राज्ञः प्रदक्षिणाम् । मानस्तोकेति मंत्रेण साष्टाण्गं प्रणमेत्सुधीः
māno mahāntamiti ca caretprājñaḥ pradakṣiṇām | mānastoketi maṃtreṇa sāṣṭāṇgaṃ praṇametsudhīḥ
The wise devotee should perform pradakṣiṇā, circumambulation, while reciting “māno mahāntam.” Then, with the mantra “mānas toke,” the discerning one should bow in sāsṭāṅga, the full eight-limbed prostration, offering the entire self to Śiva in reverent surrender.

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: Circumambulation and full prostration are classic Kāśī-liṅga worship acts: the devotee ‘orbits’ the Lord as the cosmic center and surrenders body-mind-lineage to Śiva’s protection.
Significance: Pradakṣiṇā and sāṣṭāṅga-praṇāma are bodily enactments of paśu’s submission to Pati; they are framed as direct means to receive Śiva’s protective grace and inner purification.
Mantra: “mā no mahāntam…” (during pradakṣiṇā); “mā nas toke…” (during sāṣṭāṅga-praṇāma)
Type: stotra
It teaches that worship is not only offering substances but offering oneself: circumambulation expresses placing Śiva at the center of one’s life, and eight-limbed prostration expresses total surrender (śaraṇāgati) to Pati, the Lord who grants grace and liberation.
Pradakṣiṇā and sāṣṭāṅga-pranāma are core acts in saguna worship of the Śiva-liṅga, honoring Śiva’s accessible form while cultivating inner devotion that matures toward realization of His transcendent nature.
Perform pradakṣiṇā around the liṅga with the indicated mantric recitation, then do sāṣṭāṅga-namaskāra—letting the mind become humble and one-pointed, as in Shaiva devotional discipline.
