शिवलोकप्रदमिति ब्राह्मणो वचनं यथा । मृगमासि तथा स्नायाज्जाह्नव्यां मृगगे गुरौ
śivalokapradamiti brāhmaṇo vacanaṃ yathā | mṛgamāsi tathā snāyājjāhnavyāṃ mṛgage gurau
Just as the Brāhmaṇa’s statement declares this rite to be a bestower of Śiva’s world (Śiva-loka), so too—when the Sun is in Mṛga, one should bathe in the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā) on a Thursday when the Moon is also in Mṛga; such observance leads the devotee toward Śiva-loka.
Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Viśveśvarasaṃhitā
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: The verse promises Śiva-loka through Jāhnavī-snāna under a specified lunar/solar/nakṣatra timing (Mṛga/Mṛgaśīrṣa) and Thursday. In the Śiva Purāṇa’s Viśveśvara context, Gaṅgā and Kāśī are tightly linked to Viśvanātha; while not an origin myth, the verse coheres with Kāśī-Gaṅgā soteriology where Gaṅgā is Śiva’s grace-channel.
Significance: Śiva-loka-prāpti is framed as the fruit of properly timed tīrtha-snāna; in Siddhānta, such loka is a higher post-mortem state still within graded experience, ultimately surpassed by jñāna and Śiva’s final anugraha (hinted by the next verse’s trajectory).
Shakti Form: Gaurī
Role: nurturing
Cosmic Event: Astro-timing: Sun in Mṛga-period; Moon in Mṛga (nakṣatra); Thursday (Guru-vāra).
It teaches that a Śiva-oriented observance—especially a sacred bath in the Gaṅgā performed with proper timing and faith—purifies the seeker and supports the soul’s ascent toward Śiva-loka, aligning the devotee with Pati (Śiva) through disciplined karma and devotion.
The verse emphasizes preparatory purity (snāna) and vrata-discipline that traditionally precede Saguna Śiva worship—such as Linga-pūjā with mantra and offerings—so the devotee approaches the Linga with inner and outer sanctity, making worship fruitful for grace (anugraha).
Perform Gaṅgā-snān (ritual bath) on the indicated auspicious calendrical alignment; afterward, continue with Śiva-japa (especially the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), and if following Shaiva practice, apply Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and offer worship to the Śiva-liṅga.
