Cosmogony and the Roles of the Trimūrti
यश्चैनां पाठयेत्तां च शृणुयाद्वाऽप्यभीक्ष्णशः । स्ववंशधारणं कृत्वा स्वर्गलोके महीयते
yaścaināṃ pāṭhayettāṃ ca śṛṇuyādvā'pyabhīkṣṇaśaḥ | svavaṃśadhāraṇaṃ kṛtvā svargaloke mahīyate
Whoever causes this sacred teaching to be recited, and whoever repeatedly listens to it—having upheld the continuity of one’s lineage and one’s dharmic duty—becomes honored and exalted in the heavenly worlds.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: General phalaśruti: merit from pāṭha/śravaṇa of Śiva-kathā leading to svarga and honor; in Siddhānta terms, this is a preliminary fruit (abhyudaya) that can mature toward niḥśreyasa when joined with bhakti and jñāna.
Role: nurturing
It praises śravaṇa (devout listening) and pāṭha (recitation/teaching) as Shaiva acts that generate puṇya and elevate the devotee’s spiritual standing, showing that sustained engagement with Shiva-kathā purifies the mind and supports dharma.
Reciting and hearing Shiva-centered scripture is a core limb of Saguna Shiva devotion—honoring Shiva through nāma, guṇa, and līlā—often performed alongside Linga-pūjā; the verse emphasizes that such devotional contact itself is meritorious and uplifting.
Regular pāṭha of the relevant chapter and attentive śravaṇa—ideally in a daily or vrata context (e.g., Mahāśivarātri)—can be paired with simple Linga worship, japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), and maintaining a disciplined dhārmic life.
