Kālajñāna (Knowledge of Time) and Mṛtyu-cihna (Signs of Death): Śiva’s Instruction to Umā
व्यास उवाच । सनत्कुमार सर्वज्ञ त्वत्सकाशान्मया मुने । स्त्रीस्वभावः श्रुतः प्रीत्या कालज्ञानं वदस्व मे
vyāsa uvāca | sanatkumāra sarvajña tvatsakāśānmayā mune | strīsvabhāvaḥ śrutaḥ prītyā kālajñānaṃ vadasva me
Vyāsa said: “O all-knowing Sanatkumāra, O sage—gladly I have heard from you about the nature of women. Now, I pray, teach me the knowledge of Time (kāla).”
Vyasa
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Role: teaching
It marks a shift from social observation to metaphysical inquiry: Vyāsa seeks kāla-jñāna (knowledge of Time), a key theme in Shaiva thought where time is experienced as a limiting power that the soul transcends through Shiva’s grace and right knowledge.
Kāla is often contemplated as a force governing change and limitation; Linga-worship (Saguna approach to the Supreme) trains the mind toward the timeless Pati (Shiva), helping the devotee move from time-bound experience toward the Reality beyond time.
A practical takeaway is contemplative japa with the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while reflecting on impermanence and time—using devotion and steady meditation to orient the mind toward Shiva, who is beyond kāla.
