भैरवावतारवर्णनम् (Bhairavāvatāra-varṇanam) — “Description of the Descent/Manifestation of Bhairava”
atha bhairavāvatāramāha | nandīśvara uvāca | sanatkumāra sarvvajña śṛṇu tvaṃ bhairavīṃ kathām | yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa śaivī bhaktirdṛḍhā bhavet
Now I shall speak of the descent of Bhairava. Nandīśvara said: “O Sanatkumāra, all-knowing one, listen to this sacred account of Bhairava; by mere hearing of it, devotion to Śiva becomes firm and unwavering.”
Nandishvara (Nandi)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Bhairava
Significance: Introduces Bhairava-avatāra-kathā as a śravaṇa-mātra sādhana that stabilizes śaivī-bhakti—an inner pilgrimage (antar-yātrā) culminating in receptivity to grace.
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Kālī
Role: destructive
Cosmic Event: avatāra (descent) of Bhairava is announced as the pivotal sacred event.
It establishes śravaṇa (devotional hearing) as a direct purifier: simply hearing Bhairava’s sacred narrative stabilizes Śaiva bhakti, making devotion steady and capable of leading the soul toward Shiva’s grace.
Bhairava is a Saguna manifestation of Shiva; the verse implies that devotion to Shiva’s forms—supported by hearing Purāṇic kathā—matures into firm worship (including Linga-upāsanā) anchored in reverence and surrender.
Śravaṇa of Shiva-kathā is the key practice here—regularly listening/reciting Bhairava-related chapters with faith; it can be paired with simple japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” to consolidate steady bhakti.
