Śiva–Arjuna Yuddha and the Subjugation of Pride (Śiva-parīkṣā)
शिव उवाच । हे पार्थ पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ प्रसन्नोस्मि वरं वृणु । प्रहारैस्ताडनैस्तेऽद्य पूजनम्मानितम्मया
śiva uvāca | he pārtha pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha prasannosmi varaṃ vṛṇu | prahāraistāḍanaiste'dya pūjanammānitammayā
Śiva said: “O Pārtha, best of the Pāṇḍavas, I am pleased. Choose a boon. Today, by your blows and strikes, your worship has been accepted and honored by Me.”
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
It teaches that Śiva recognizes the devotee’s inner intent; even unconventional actions become worship when performed with unwavering focus and surrender, and the Lord responds with grace (anugraha) by granting a boon.
In Saguna worship, Śiva personally accepts offerings made with devotion. The verse underscores that what makes pūjā effective is not mere external correctness but the living relationship with Śiva, who ‘honors’ the offering when bhakti is genuine.
The takeaway is steadfast bhakti: approach Śiva with one-pointed remembrance (smaraṇa) and japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—so that worship is inwardly anchored even when outer circumstances are difficult.
