Śiva–Arjuna Yuddha and the Subjugation of Pride (Śiva-parīkṣā)
गणैश्च विविधैस्तीक्ष्णैरायुधैस्तं न्यपीडयत् । तैस्तदा पीडितः पार्थः सस्मार स्वामिनं शिवम्
gaṇaiśca vividhaistīkṣṇairāyudhaistaṃ nyapīḍayat | taistadā pīḍitaḥ pārthaḥ sasmāra svāminaṃ śivam
Then the gaṇas, wielding many kinds of sharp weapons, pressed him hard. Tormented by them at that moment, Pārtha remembered his Lord—Śiva.

It teaches śaraṇāgati (taking refuge): when worldly力量 and fear intensify, the devotee turns inward to remember Pati—Lord Śiva—whose grace removes bondage and steadies the mind.
Remembering “svāminam śivam” points to Saguna-upāsanā—personal devotion to Śiva as the protective Lord; such remembrance is the inner core of Linga worship, where the devotee centers awareness on Śiva’s presence beyond fear.
Smaraṇa and japa: in distress, repeat the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with focused remembrance of Śiva; this is the immediate sādhana implied by “sasmāra śivam.”
