Yatinātha-līlā: Śiva’s Test of the Bhilla Devotees at Arbuda Mountain
यतिनाथ उवाच । अद्य स्थलं निवासार्थं देहि मे प्रातरेव हि । यास्यामि सर्वथा भिल्ल स्वस्ति स्यात्तव सर्वदा
yatinātha uvāca | adya sthalaṃ nivāsārthaṃ dehi me prātareva hi | yāsyāmi sarvathā bhilla svasti syāttava sarvadā
Yatinātha said: “Grant me a place to stay for today; indeed, I shall depart in the morning. O Bhilla, I will certainly go—may auspiciousness ever be yours.”
Yatinātha (an ascetic)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Bhikṣāṭana
Role: teaching
It highlights ascetic humility and non-attachment: the renunciate asks only for one night’s shelter and departs at dawn, blessing the host—an ethic aligned with Shaiva dharma where compassion and auspicious intent purify both giver and receiver.
Though the Linga is not named here, the conduct reflects Saguna Shiva’s virtues—grace, gentleness, and the uplift of even those outside formal Vedic society—showing that devotion to Shiva is expressed through dharmic behavior and blessing others.
A practical takeaway is daily dawn discipline (prātaḥ-kāla): rise early, keep a simple routine, and maintain a Shiva-centered attitude of goodwill—mentally repeating a Shiva mantra (e.g., Om Namaḥ Śivāya) while offering blessings and avoiding clinging to comfort.
