द्विजेश्वरावतारः
The Manifestation of Shiva as Dvijeśvara

In order to test the truth of that dharma, He manifested once again; assuming the form of Dvijeśvara, a lordly Brahmin, I shall now recount that very account.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Tatpuruṣa
Significance: Depicts Śiva’s ‘testing’ of dharma through a concealed/disguised manifestation—an instructive paradigm for devotees: the Lord may veil His divinity (tirodhāna) to examine and mature the soul’s adherence to dharma.
Role: teaching
It shows that Shiva, as Pati (the Lord), compassionately tests and reveals dharma through divine līlā—so that true righteousness is clarified and the devotee’s inner sincerity is brought to light.
The verse highlights Saguna Shiva’s accessible manifestations: even when the Absolute is beyond form, Shiva assumes a knowable form (here, a Brahmin) to guide beings—mirroring how the Linga serves as a worshipful, graspable support for devotion and realization.
The practical takeaway is vigilance in dharma and humility: maintain daily Shiva-smarana (remembrance) through japa of the Panchakshara mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and let conduct be tested by truthfulness and compassion.
