Beholding Him, the sage was filled with joy; his body thrilled with horripilation. From the depths of his heart he repeatedly uttered, “Namah to You—homage, again and again.”
Suta Goswami (narrating the episode to the sages of Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
It presents the classic Shaiva mark of true devotion: upon Shiva’s darshan, inner bliss overflows into spontaneous reverence—repeated “namo’stu”—showing surrender of ego and heartfelt recognition of Pati (the Lord).
The verse emphasizes Saguna-darshan—encountering Shiva in a perceivable form—which naturally culminates in namaskara and praise. The same bhava is central to Linga worship, where the devotee approaches Shiva as the gracious, accessible Lord.
Repeated heartfelt salutation functions like japa: mentally or verbally repeat “Namo’stu” or the Panchakshara “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” with devotion, allowing the mind to rest in reverence and surrender.
