त्रिपुरदीक्षाविधानम् — Tripura Dīkṣā: Prescriptive Procedure
Chapter on the Ordinance of Initiation
ऋषिर्यतिस्तथा कीर्यौपाध्याय इति स्वयम् । इमान्यपि तु नामानि प्रसिद्धानि भवंतु वः
ṛṣiryatistathā kīryaupādhyāya iti svayam | imānyapi tu nāmāni prasiddhāni bhavaṃtu vaḥ
“He himself is indeed known as ‘Ṛṣi’, ‘Yati’, ‘Kīr’, and ‘Upādhyāya’. Let these names also become well-known among you.”
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
The verse highlights Shiva’s completeness: he embodies the illumined seer (ṛṣi), the detached renunciate (yati), and the guiding preceptor (upādhyāya). In Shaiva understanding, these names point to Shiva as the supreme teacher who grants knowledge and liberation.
Such epithets support Saguna devotion: worshippers contemplate Shiva not only as the formless Absolute but also as the compassionate Guru-Śiva. In Linga worship, these names become contemplative handles (bhāvanā) for focusing the mind on Shiva’s grace and authority.
A practical takeaway is nāma-smaraṇa (repetition of Shiva’s names) alongside japa—especially the Panchakshara “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—meditating on Shiva as Ṛṣi (inner insight), Yati (detachment), and Upādhyāya (inner guidance).
