नारदमोहवर्णनम् — Description of Nārada’s Delusion
एवमुक्तो मुनिर्हृष्टः स्वरूपं प्राप्य वै हरेः । मेने कृतार्थमात्मानं तद्यत्नं न बुबोध सः
evamukto munirhṛṣṭaḥ svarūpaṃ prāpya vai hareḥ | mene kṛtārthamātmānaṃ tadyatnaṃ na bubodha saḥ
Thus addressed, the sage rejoiced; having indeed attained the form of Hari, he considered himself fully accomplished. He did not understand the deeper intent behind that endeavour.
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Cosmic Event: Bondage-through-misrecognition motif: the soul mistakes a partial attainment for final liberation (tattva-ajnāna as pाश)
The verse warns that attaining an exalted state—even a divine form—can produce complacency. In a Shaiva Siddhanta lens, true kṛtārthatā (fulfillment) is not merely acquiring a status, but gaining right knowledge and orientation toward the Supreme (Pati), otherwise the deeper purpose of sādhana is missed.
It highlights that saguna attainments (forms, visions, boons) are meaningful but not final if one clings to them as the goal. Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is repeatedly presented as a means to pierce beyond form-identification and mature into steadiness in Shiva-bhakti and higher realization.
The takeaway is vigilance and humility in practice: continue japa and contemplation rather than stopping at a ‘boon’ or experience. In Shiva Purana terms, steady Panchakshara japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and disciplined worship (with bhasma/tripuṇḍra and Rudrākṣa, where prescribed) help prevent spiritual complacency.
