संध्याचरित्रवर्णनम् (Sandhyā-caritra-varṇana) — “Account of Sandhyā’s Story”
अज्ञात्वा तपसो भावं तपोवनमुपाश्रिता । चिंतया परिशुष्येहं वेपते हि मनो मम
ajñātvā tapaso bhāvaṃ tapovanamupāśritā | ciṃtayā pariśuṣyehaṃ vepate hi mano mama
Not understanding the true spirit of austerity, I have taken refuge in this forest of penance. Yet here I wither away through anxious thought, and my mind indeed trembles.
Sati (addressing her own inner turmoil; narrated within Suta Goswami’s discourse)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Highlights the need for right understanding (tapas-bhāva) beyond external austerity—pilgrimage/penance without jñāna can intensify inner agitation; true fruit comes through Śiva’s teaching and grace.
Shakti Form: Satī
Role: liberating
It teaches that tapas is not mere physical hardship; its bhāva (inner intent) must be aligned to Shiva. When the mind is ruled by anxiety and doubt, even a holy place like a tapovana cannot yield the fruit of spiritual steadiness.
Sati’s confession points to the Shaiva emphasis on right orientation of the heart—turning the wavering mind toward Saguna Shiva (worshipful Lord) through devotion and remembrance, rather than relying only on external austerity.
The implied remedy is mind-stilling Shiva-smaraṇa and japa—especially the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya)—so that tapas becomes inward concentration rather than worry-driven self-drying.
