Role: liberating
Offering: dipa
It declares the phala (spiritual fruit) of śravaṇa and pāṭha: devotionally reading or arranging the reading of this Shiva narrative grants worldly fulfillment when due, and culminates in moksha through Shiva’s grace.
In the Shiva Purana, hearing and reciting Shiva-kathā is itself a form of Saguna-bhakti (devotion to Shiva with attributes), which purifies the mind and supports Linga-worship by deepening faith, surrender, and remembrance of Lord Shiva.
Regular pāṭha (recitation) and śravaṇa (listening) of the Shiva Purana—especially on auspicious days like Mahashivratri—performed with devotion, is the implied practice; it can be paired with japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” for focused remembrance.
