Some arrived from behind, and some came through the sky; others, covering all the directions and intermediate quarters, surrounded the place on every side.

Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Sthala Purana: The gaṇas converge upon Dakṣa’s yajña from all quarters, signaling the inescapability of Rudra’s ordinance when dharma is violated.
Significance: Contemplation on Śiva’s sarvavyāpitva (all-pervasiveness): no ‘direction’ is outside Pati’s governance; egoic ritual cannot ‘flee’ accountability.
Shakti Form: Satī
Role: destructive
It depicts a cosmic convergence—beings assembling from every direction—signifying that events connected with Shiva and Satī draw the attention of the entire universe, reminding devotees that the Lord’s līlā moves all realms and orders.
The surrounding assembly highlights Saguna Shiva’s manifest presence within history and sacred narrative; in practice, devotees approach the Linga similarly—circling (pradakṣiṇā) and gathering the mind from all ‘directions’ into a single-pointed focus on Shiva.
A practical takeaway is inward ‘surrounding’: collect the senses from all directions through japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and perform pradakṣiṇā of the Shiva-Linga, optionally with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) as a sign of Shaiva dedication.
