उत्पातवर्णनम् / Description of Portents at Dakṣa’s Sacrifice

When the vultures touched Dakṣa’s severed head, they sprang forth by the thousands; and by the shade of their wings the sacrificial pavilion became covered in a dense, ominous shadow.

Cosmic Event: Yajña-space becomes physically ‘eclipsed’ by carrion-bird swarms—an embodied omen of ritual death and impending dissolution
The mass of vultures and the darkening of the yāga-maṇḍapa symbolize the collapse of a sacrifice performed with ego and disrespect toward Śiva—an outer ritual losing its sanctity when devotion (bhakti) and right orientation to Pati (Śiva) are absent.
Dakṣa’s rite stands for karma-kāṇḍa without surrender; the Purāṇa contrasts this with Śiva-worship—especially saguna devotion through the Liṅga—where humility, reverence, and inner purification make worship spiritually fruitful.
The takeaway is to prioritize Śiva-bhakti alongside rite: daily remembrance of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with a pure intention, and simple Śiva-pūjā (e.g., offering water to the Liṅga) rather than prideful display of ritual.
