For those people whose name is uttered as the two-syllabled “Śiva”—spoken aloud even once, even in mere passing—that utterance swiftly destroys the entirety of their sin.
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Mantra: शिवेति
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
It proclaims the extraordinary sanctifying power of Śiva-nāma: even a single utterance of “Śiva,” made casually, can burn accumulated pāpa and turn the mind toward Śiva’s grace (anugraha), which is central to liberation in Śaiva thought.
The verse supports Saguna devotion by emphasizing accessible worship through the Name; nāma-japa becomes a direct form of approach to Śiva, harmonizing with Liṅga-pūjā where the devotee invokes Śiva’s presence through mantra and remembrance.
Regular nāma-japa—repeating “Śiva” or the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—is implied; as a practical takeaway, one may combine japa with simple daily Śiva-smaraṇa and purity observances (such as bhasma/Tripuṇḍra where customary).
