आत्मसंभावितो मूढ स्तब्धो मौनी समत्सरः । कर्मण्यस्मिन्न योग्योसौ नानीतो हि मयाऽधुना
ātmasaṃbhāvito mūḍha stabdho maunī samatsaraḥ | karmaṇyasminna yogyosau nānīto hi mayā'dhunā
He is self-conceited, deluded, stiff with pride, given to obstinate silence, and envious. He is not fit for this sacred rite; therefore I have not brought him here now.
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
The verse teaches that spiritual and ritual eligibility depends on inner disposition—humility, clarity, and freedom from envy—rather than mere outward form. In a Shaiva Siddhanta lens, ego (āṇava) and jealousy bind the soul (paśu) and make one unfit to approach Shiva-tattva through sacred action.
Linga/Saguna Shiva worship is fruitful when approached with devotion and purity of intent. This verse warns that prideful, resentful attitudes obstruct grace (anugraha), so external worship without inner surrender becomes spiritually ineffective.
The implied practice is self-purification before worship: cultivate humility, drop envy, and steady the mind. Practically, one may prepare with Panchakshara japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a sattvic vow of restraint so the rite is performed in a fit inner state.
