The Great Assembly at Prayāga: Śiva’s Appearance and Dakṣa’s Arrival
श्मशानवासी निरपत्रपो ह्ययं कथं प्रणामं न करोति मेऽधुना । लुप्तक्रियो भूतपिशाचसेवितो मत्तोऽविधो नीतिविदूषकस्सदा
śmaśānavāsī nirapatrapo hyayaṃ kathaṃ praṇāmaṃ na karoti me'dhunā | luptakriyo bhūtapiśācasevito matto'vidho nītividūṣakassadā
“This one dwells in the cremation-ground and is utterly shameless—how is it that he does not bow to me even now? His rites are lost, he is attended by bhūtas and piśācas; like a drunkard he is unruly, ever a mocker of propriety.”
Daksha
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Bhairava
It exposes the ego of ritual-pride: Daksha judges Shiva by social norms, while Shaiva teaching points to Shiva as Pati—beyond fear, impurity, and worldly status—so arrogance becomes the real impurity that blocks grace.
Daksha’s criticism reflects misunderstanding of Saguna Shiva’s ash-smeared, cremation-ground symbolism; Linga-worship trains devotees to see the Absolute in what the world rejects, honoring Shiva’s transcendence rather than external respectability.
Cultivate humility through japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and reverence for bhasma as a reminder of impermanence—replacing pride in ‘mere rites’ with inward devotion and surrender.
