क्षपाक्षयेषवलयं दृश्यते कालिकागता । अंबुधाविव संदीप्तपावको वडवामुखः
kṣapākṣayeṣavalayaṃ dṛśyate kālikāgatā | aṃbudhāviva saṃdīptapāvako vaḍavāmukhaḥ
As the night waned, Kālikā appeared, seen encircled by the hosts of the Lord of the Night (Śiva). Within the ocean she blazed like the mare-faced fire (Vaḍavāmukha)—a fierce, kindled flame hidden in the waters.

Cosmic Event: Subterranean fire (vaḍavānala) imagery—latent dissolution power within the waters.
The verse portrays the sudden manifestation of divine Śakti (Kālīkā) under Śiva’s lordship, symbolizing the transformative power that burns impurities even when concealed—like submarine fire within the ocean—guiding the soul toward purification and liberation.
By depicting Kālīkā within Śiva’s encircling host, the verse reinforces Saguna worship: Śiva is the sovereign reality (Pati) and Śakti is His dynamic power. Linga worship similarly honors Śiva as the transcendent-support of all manifestations while acknowledging His energies in the world.
Meditate on the inner ‘fire of awareness’ that consumes bondage (pāśa), repeating the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and contemplate Śiva-Śakti as the purifier of hidden karmic residues—supported by Shaiva practices like vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa where appropriate.
