Himālaya Mission of the Gods’ Preceptor / The Gods Send Their Guru
देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शंकर । वयं त्वां शरणापन्नाः कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते
devā ūcuḥ | devadeva mahādeva karuṇākara śaṃkara | vayaṃ tvāṃ śaraṇāpannāḥ kṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te
The Devas said: “O God of gods, O Mahādeva, O compassionate Śaṅkara—we have come to You for refuge. Show us Your grace. Salutations to You.”
The Devas (gods)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Sthala Purana: Not a specific jyotirliṅga episode; the verse functions as a paradigmatic śaraṇāgati-stuti addressed to Devadeva, emphasizing karuṇā as the ground of divine intervention.
Significance: Models the inner pilgrimage: surrender (śaraṇāpatti) and request for kṛpā, understood in Siddhānta as Śiva’s anugraha that loosens pāśa and turns the paśu toward liberation.
Mantra: देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शंकर । वयं त्वां शरणापन्नाः कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
It expresses śaraṇāgati (taking refuge) in Shiva as Pati—the compassionate Lord whose anugraha (grace) protects and uplifts the souls beyond fear and limitation.
The Devas address Shiva with personal epithets (Devadeva, Mahadeva, Shankara), reflecting Saguna devotion; such surrender is central to Linga-worship where the devotee seeks Shiva’s compassionate presence and blessing.
A simple practice is to offer namaskāra and repeat a Shiva mantra (especially the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with the inner attitude of surrender, praying for karuṇā (grace).
